Tony English Award
Overview
Tony English was pivotal in establishing AVCB in 1991 and was a driving force behind its activities until his death in 2015. At the AVCB General Meeting 2018 it was proposed by Andrew Tribe that in recognition of Tony’s contribution a Tony English Award should be established. The Executive Committee of AVCB together with Tony’s family are pleased to offer this award.
Objective
The presenter of The Tony English Lecture is selected with particular care so that the lecture can set the theme for the AVCB program (generally, at the AVA national conference), or provide an important free-standing lecture on a topic which develops a subject of importance or novelty in conservation biology. The speaker need not be a veterinarian or an AVA member. The lecture will be open to speakers in a prominent position who have made a contribution to conservation in the broader sense. A key proposed outcome, if appropriate, is to appeal to the broader AVA membership (conference delegates generally, not just AVCB members) to be educated and inspired by a conservation biology topic.
Recognition
The awardee would receive a certificate, and their name entered on a roll maintained to document the lecture. The certificate would be presented following the Lecture or at the AVCB annual meeting, or as determined by the Executive Committee.
Financial
- A financial award of $1000, to be included in the AVCB budget annually.
- Conference costs and expenses as normally provided to AVA Conference to defray travel, accommodation and one day’s registration would be included (in addition to the Award amount).
Selection
The recipient would be selected by the AVCB Executive Committee to fit generally with the objectives of the award and the proposed scientific program for that year or in accordance with long term objectives being developed in the Strategic Plan of AVCB or as determined by the Executive Committee.
