Dr Sarah Webb

Dr Sarah Webb is widely regarded as one of the founding figures in small animal surgery in Australia. For many years, she was the only registered small animal surgical specialist in southeast NSW, where her expertise and compassion were invaluable to countless clients and their pets. Known for her deep knowledge, surgical skill, and empathetic approach, Dr Webb became a trusted last resort for many pet owners, helping thousands of animals suffering from pain and disability regain their quality of life.

Graduating from the University of Queensland in 1976, her early career saw her practicing in both Brisbane and the UK before returning to the University in 1980 to complete an internship and residency under the guidance of renowned veterinary surgeons Geoff Robins and Rick Reed. In 1986, she moved to a productive beef cattle property near Gundaroo, north of Canberra, where she pioneered a unique approach as an itinerant specialist, travelling to various referral clinics to perform advanced surgeries. Her exceptional surgical skills and dedication earned her a reputation as a highly respected professional within the veterinary community.

Her journey continued with her involvement in several veterinary hospitals across the Canberra region until 2014, when she and Dr Jacob Michelsen co-founded the Animal Referral Hospital Canberra, marking a significant milestone in the development of specialist veterinary care in the area. In 1996, Dr Webb’s expertise was officially recognised when she was enrolled as a Specialist in Small Animal Surgery by the ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board.

Dr Webb’s served on the ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board (later the Veterinary Practitioners’ Board) from 2005, becoming its President from 2014 to 2017 and remaining an active member until 2018. She also served on the board of the Sydney Veterinary Post Graduate Foundation (later CVE), including a term as Chair, and played a significant role on various committees that helped establish the Veterinary School at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Dr Sarah Webb’s profound contributions to veterinary surgery, her relentless dedication to advancing the profession, and her compassionate service to both clients and colleagues make her a truly exceptional and deserving winner of the Kendall Oration.
