Overview
Castration of the equid is one of the most common surgical procedures equine practitioners perform. The rate of complications has been documented to range from 6% to 38%. Most complications are described as mild and non-life threatening; however, some complications, such as hemorrhage or evisceration, can be life-threatening. Complications can occur intraoperative, immediately post-operative, and up to years post-operative. Good preoperative planning, intra-operative technique, and clear client communication can help avoid many complications. This presentation will review the anatomy, surgical techniques for castration, advantages and disadvantages of described surgical techniques, potential complications, and how to manage complications.
