On-Demand | Dr Kat Williams | Burnout and how to leave work at work 1 CPD Points

Overview

Chronic work-related stress and burnout are increasing problems for veterinarians. Though considered an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition, burnout often manifests as a variety of physical and psychological symptoms and is bidirectionally related to physical and mental illness. Too often burnout is misconceived as a personal failure of the individual, one that the person must fix with more resilience and self-care. In this session we will examine the three dimensions of burnout – emotional exhaustion, cynicism/depersonalisation, and reduced professional efficacy – and the organisational and individual factors that contribute to burnout. We will discuss the need for shared responsibility and a collaborative employer-employee response to prevent and reduce burnout. Likewise, we will explore how organisational and individual strategies can be leveraged together to help veterinarians leave work at work.
