Overview

The Eight Extraordinary Channels are often overlooked, under-recognized, and underutilized in veterinary medicine. While the Du (Governing) and Ren (Conception) Mai are commonly used, the remaining six are not. These six channels include the Dai (Belt), Chong (Thoroughfare), Yin and Yang Qiao (Heel), and the Yin and Yang Wei (Linking) Mai. This lecture series aims to increase awareness and recognition of pattern symptoms associated with these six Extraordinary Channels. In this first hour, we will analyze why these Eight Channels are “extraordinary,” review their functions, discuss indications for selection, and explore general needling protocols. OBJECTIVES: Discuss the “extraordinary” characteristics of the Extraordinary Channels Discuss the general functions of the Extraordinary Channels. Discuss the indications for selecting an Extraordinary Channel. Discuss the needling protocols applied when accessing the Extraordinary Channels.

Dr Delores Craig
Dr. Delores T. Craig graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia Veterinary College in 1983. She is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA), Certified Veterinary Chinese Herbalist (CVCH), and a Fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (FAAVA). Dr. Craig became interested in acupuncture in 2004, was certified in 2006 (IVAS), and has taught acupuncture to her veterinary colleagues with the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society since 2008. In 2021, Dr. Craig retired from private practice. She remains active in Integrative Veterinary Medicine as an International Veterinary Basic Course Instructor and lecturer. She has presented at various venues, including the AVMA, Western Veterinary Conference, Oquendo Center, VMX, Midwest Veterinary Conference, Southwest Veterinary Symposium, International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, and the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association.
