AVA president Dr Bronwyn Orr, CEO Dr David Andrews and Chief Veterinary Officer of Australia Dr Mark Schipp met recently to discuss the future of the veterinary profession, as well as reflect on progress made over the past year.

Key focuses of the meeting included:

  • Engagement between the AVA and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
  • Workforce sustainability via addressing the workforce shortage. The AVA is lobbying for veterinarians working in rural areas to be given HECS fee forgiveness, as well as elevating the profile and essential nature of the profession.
  • Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) preparedness and the role of private veterinarians.  Dr Schipp will also be speaking at the AVA’s EAD Vet Summit in Canberra from 29 November to 1 December 2022.
  • Australian National Centre for Disease Control, and the importance of a one health approach.
