ACT Veterinary Practice Act amendments update
26 Jun 2025The ACT Legislative Assembly is expected to consider a Bill this week introducing the first set of amendments arising from the recent review of the Veterinary Practice Act.
The AVA has welcomed several key changes in the Bill, many of which reflect AVA recommendations. Notably, the objects of the Act have been expanded to better align with the AVA’s “Key principles for veterinary legislation in Australia”. Minor updates have also been made to the functions of the Veterinary Practitioners Board, and a new requirement for veterinarians to hold professional indemnity insurance has been introduced.
However, the AVA has expressed concern over the removal of a legislated requirement to consult certain professional bodies on future regulation changes. In response, the AVA has engaged directly with the Minister’s office and secured assurances that, despite the legislative changes, the AVA will continue to be consulted on the development of future amendments. Crucially, the formal requirement for AVA consultation on Veterinary Board appointments remains in place.
Further amendments—including those concerning the possible registration of veterinary nurses—are still in early development. The AVA will continue to engage closely with key stakeholders to ensure timely and effective input as the reform process progresses.
