Afterhours services model project

28 Mar 2024

A national advocacy project is underway aimed to gather information from the veterinary profession to inform and guide the development of mechanisms to improve sustainability and satisfaction of veterinary roles in relationship to the impact of providing afterhours services, including the impact on veterinary business.

It has been confirmed in previous work undertaken by the AVA that the provision of afterhours services detrimentally impacts the satisfaction and sustainability of working as a veterinarian in the veterinary setting. This contributes to retention challenges and the workforce shortage experienced across the profession, and most noticeably in rural, regional, and remote areas. Some types of afterhours service models used may offer better options to reduce the negative impacts, and this information could be provided across the AVA membership.
