Australian Veterinary Journal: September Biosecurity issue
28 Aug 2025
As Australia celebrates National Biosecurity Week (25-31 August), the AVA is pleased to announce the September issue of the Australian Veterinary Journal (AVJ) (to be published on 4 September) will focus on biosecurity, a topic central to Australia’s position as a major global food exporter.
Eight scientific papers have been selected for publication. They include work from a diverse range of private and public sector groups and reflect the importance of sound biosecurity policy regulation and disease response plans. This issue is a must for anyone connected to food animal production and good for continuing education credits.

Dr Kirsty Richards – hands on (supplied)
Dr Kirsty Richards contributed to four different papers in the biosecurity issue. She is the lead author of one paper about the disease risk associated with the importation of fresh porcine semen and another about using micro-encapsulated sodium nitrite to humanely euthanise large numbers of pigs in the event of an emergency disease incursion. In addition, she is a contributing author on a paper about the description of the pork industry supply chain with respect to an emergency animal disease response and another on a study of the survival of African swine fever virus in the carcasses of pigs under different field conditions
The Australian Veterinary Journal (AVJ) is Australia's leading scientific publication in the field and provides an essential forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge veterinary research. The AVJ publishes original scientific research, short communications, case reports, reviews, book reviews, letters to the Editor, obituaries and more. Free access to the AVJ and over 300 full text international peer-reviewed journals and magazines is included with your AVA membership.
