AVA Benevolent Fund update
27 Oct 2023
The AVA Benevolent Fund (the Fund) is a registered charity run by AVA members to provide financial support for any veterinarian and/or their family experiencing financial hardship. The Fund assists veterinarians who have suffered loss of income and/or property through bushfires, floods or other events beyond their control; accidents at work; physical or mental health problems, and personal/family problems. In the past 18 months, the Fund has assisted more than 25 veterinarians in need.
The Fund is seeking an AVA member to become a voluntary trustee. The trustees consider applications for assistance and collectively make decisions regarding the financial help that can be provided. The time commitment varies with the number of requests for assistance, usually 1–2 hours per fortnight, along with an annual meeting via Zoom or in-person at the AVA Conference. Trustees are expected to respond promptly via email to requests forwarded by the secretary to allow timely decisions. Trustees also help manage the Fund’s finances and future sustainability.
The Fund is also seeking to establish voluntary fund representatives in each state. The state representatives will assist the AVA in identifying and liaising with members who may require assistance from the Fund.
