President’s message from Dr Diana Barker – October 2023
27 Oct 2023During my first few months as President of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), I've had the chance to speak with many of you, our members, as well as other professionals in our industry. These conversations have shown me many of the strengths and challenges we face as a profession.
One key message that has come up repeatedly is the importance of unity. It's clear that we need to come together as a united profession when dealing with government and pushing forward our advocacy items, be it at the federal or state level. This message has been reinforced by political insiders - the idea that good ideas alone will bring success is flawed. Governments receive countless good ideas, but to bring forward good ideas, with strong, unwavering commitment from our profession, is the key to success.
We are still a fragmented profession when it comes to solving our problems. As veterinarians and problem solvers, we tend to rush toward solutions that may be isolated from the larger problem, or we try to tackle too many things at once. This leads to slow or no progress. It's crucial for us to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. My message is that we need to collaborate to make an impact. We need to put aside personal projects temporarily and come together to present a united front. The AVA is working hard, collaborating with other industry bodies to provide comprehensive and encompassing solutions for many of the issues we face as a profession.
With these insights in mind, the AVA is expanding our advocacy efforts. We're focusing on building stronger relationships with politicians, advisors and bureaucrats in Canberra. We're also looking to work closely with key stakeholders to create a coalition for the veterinary profession. With a focused and coordinated approach, we can make a real impact.
While our journey may take time and effort, I'm confident that by staying focused and repeating our message to governments, we can bring about significant changes for our profession.
I want to thank you for your dedication and support. Together, we are stronger, and together, we can make a difference.
