President's Message from Dr Gemma Chuck - May 2025

21 May 2025
2025 AVA Awards, Dr Gemma Chuck, AVA President

I'd like to begin by thanking the AVA Board for this incredible opportunity. I feel privileged to be in the position to lead the AVA through the next 12 months, as our association goes through some of the largest changes in its recent history. At times these changes may make us feel uncomfortable. They may challenge our beliefs. But I ask all of you to consider your default response change, as our Plenary speaker Mark McKeown encouraged us to do. We need to accept and explore what this change looks like so that we can appropriately action it.

The Constitution Reform and Membership Model projects are the culmination of years of work and I am committed to ensure that together, we can get the job done. We need to remember that this is what our members have asked for- a more flexible and relevant association. I am very much looking forward to the member consultation over the next few months as this will guide us during the next phase of this journey. We need to listen to all of our members – this is your association and your future.

During my past 4 years on the AVA Board, I have been fortunate enough to work with some highly skilled, capable and inspiring people. Dr Sally Colgan is no exception and her term as President has paved the way in our advocacy efforts along with the many strategic projects we are in the midst of. I certainly have some big shoes to fill and I am fortunate to have a supportive team around me in the AVA Board, our CEO, Melissa King, and our Executive Leadership Team. I am also fortunate to have a supportive husband.

So, we have a busy 12 months ahead. I ask you to be open-minded and patient as we navigate this process. I ask you to get involved. This is your association and any changes will be shaped by you. I imagine an AVA that is truly inclusive of all sectors of our profession, and all the beautiful diversity that we can truly be proud of. Thank you.
