Encouraging individual submissions to the inquiry into the veterinary workforce shortage in NSW

14 Jul 2023

At the AVA, we strongly believe in the power of collective action through a united voice, complimented by individual voices. We encourage you to consider submitting your own individual feedback and recommendations directly to the inquiry. The deadline for submissions to the inquiry is 21 July 2023.

Your unique perspectives and experiences will further enrich the discussions and ensure a comprehensive representation of the veterinary community's needs and concerns to the inquiry.

When preparing your individual submission, consider addressing some or all of the inquiry's terms of reference. Remember, your submission doesn't need to address all of these points. Focus on the issues most relevant to your experience and expertise.

Your narrative and experiences can provide a human element to the data, statistics, and broader themes. Please also remember to maintain confidentiality and respect for privacy where appropriate. While crafting your submission, be concise, clear, detailed as possible, and consider the following:

  • Overview of Current Challenges: Describe the main issues you face, such as long working hours, staff shortages, remuneration concerns, mental health, or the challenges of rural practice. Be specific about how these issues impact you, your colleagues, and your practice.
  • Personal Stories: Incorporate personal experiences that illustrate the issues you're highlighting. These anecdotes can make your submission more impactful, providing a real-world perspective of the challenges within our profession.
  • Impact on Animal Health and Welfare: Explain how workforce shortages and related challenges affect the quality of care provided to animals, and ultimately their health and welfare.
  • Suggestions for Improvement: Offer your thoughts on potential solutions or changes that could alleviate the problems you've identified. This could include recommendations for education and training, financial incentives, improved working conditions, or government policies.
  • Impact on Public Health and Biosecurity: Veterinarians play a crucial role in public health and biosecurity. If relevant, describe the potential consequences of workforce shortages in these areas.

To help you articulate your points, the AVA has provided some key messages extracted from their comprehensive submission that's currently being finalised. These key messages can serve as a guide and you may consider incorporating into your submission as you see fit.
