The Veterinarians in Education Research and Academia (VERA) Excellence in Teaching Award (EITA) is the Australian Veterinary Association's (AVA) most prestigious recognition of teaching excellence in veterinary education. Established in 2015, the award celebrates the vital role of educators who contribute to the advancement of veterinary science and animal care at Australian universities. Each year, this award highlights exceptional educators who demonstrate outstanding commitment to their students and the field of veterinary education.

The Excellence in Teaching Award is specifically designed to honour AVA members who, either individually or as part of a teaching team, play a key role in shaping the future of veterinary education. Those in veterinary science, animal care, veterinary nursing, veterinary technology, and teaching research can apply.

To be eligible for the award, nominees must be active AVA members. The award acknowledges those who display exceptional teaching practices and make significant contributions to enhancing student learning experiences within veterinary and para-veterinary sciences programs.

The EITA recipient receives a minimum of a $1,000 cash award, a commemorative certificate, and the opportunity to present at the AVA’s “Excellence in Teaching Award” webinar.

The award aims to foster excellence in the learning and teaching of veterinary sciences and related fields. Its primary purpose is to recognise those who inspire and engage students while contributing to the ongoing development of best practices in veterinary education. By supporting and promoting these outstanding educators, the award encourages the sharing of knowledge and innovative teaching strategies that can have a lasting impact on the field. Recipients are expected to lead by example, pushing for improvements and furthering advancements in education through continuous learning and collaboration with their institutions.

The AVA’s goal with the EITA is to elevate the standard of veterinary education across Australia. The sharing of knowledge from awardees helps to build a network of educators who can collectively influence the future of veterinary education, ensuring that future veterinarians and animal care professionals receive the highest quality training.

Nominations for the 2025 Excellence in Teaching Award are now open. The deadline for nominations is Thursday 24 April 2025. Nominations can be submitted online, with further details and instructions available on the AVA website.
