Scheduled medicine supply - addressing regulatory challenges
30 Aug 2024This week the need to comply with regulations concerning the supply of S4 medications was raised by multiple SIGs and Divisions relating to a situation in NSW. The AVA was able to provide timely and accurate advice and liaise with the relevant state Veterinary Board to assist and advise members.
Among the challenges facing the veterinary profession in Australia, particularly for those working in regional and remote areas, is the need to comply with regulations concerning the supply of scheduled drugs.
Last year, the WA, NT, and QLD Division Executive Committees identified concerns regarding veterinarians' abilities to deliver services in compliance with legislation and regulations.
In response, an Advocacy Project was initiated with each of these Divisions, leading to the drafting of discussion papers focused on division-specific aspects for interactions with Veterinary Boards and, if appropriate, to approach their Departments of Health for reform. Given the complexity, this project is expected to be long-term and is being treated as a pilot to guide future advocacy efforts across other Divisions.
This reform project is focused on legislation and other regulations that may no longer be suitable for contemporary veterinary practice. Key aspects under consideration by the AVA include enabling the delivery of contextualised veterinary care, the safe and effective use of progressive modalities such as telemedicine, and the reinforcement of antimicrobial stewardship.
