AVA Advocates for Practical Solutions: Secure Storage of S8 Medicines in QLD Veterinary Practice

01 May 2025

The AVA has made a formal submission to Queensland Health calling for amendments to the Departmental Standard for Secure Storage of S8 Medicines. Current rules prohibit overnight storage of S8 medicines in veterinary vehicles, creating safety risks and operational challenges for vets working in remote and regional areas. We propose a veterinary-specific exemption to allow secure, concealed storage of S8 medicines in locked vehicles — similar to arrangements already in place for ambulance services and the RFDS. This change would enhance safety, reduce regulatory confusion, and support continuity of vital veterinary services across Queensland.
