Submission to consultation on amendments to the South Australian Dog and Cat Management Act

30 Sep 2024

The AVA’s submission in response to the proposed amendments to the South Australian Dog and Cat Management Act advocates pausing the legislative changes to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based Cat Management Strategy before proceeding with amendments.

Concern was raised over the binary categorisation of cats as either owned or feral, suggesting a more nuanced approach that reflects various human-animal relationships.

The submission highlights the need for science-based management strategies for different cat populations and emphasises that veterinary practices, as private businesses, should not bear the financial burden of caring for stray cats unless formal agreements with appropriate compensation are in place.
