Submission to South Australia Animal Welfare Bill 2024
04 Jun 2024The AVA placed a submission to the South Australian Government’s consultation on the draft Animal Welfare Bill to update the Animal Welfare Act.
The submission conveyed the AVA’s strong principles centred on the welfare and ethical treatment of animals, emphasising that animals, as sentient beings, should be treated humanely and with respect for their intrinsic
value. The AVA shared its views on the ethical treatment of animals, including the focus on a compassionate approach to managing animal care, and ensuring their well-being is always a priority in legislative frameworks.
It was also emphasised that animal welfare legislation needs to align across jurisdictions to give the maximum possible national consistency, and it also needs to be flexible enough to allow for sustainable improvement of welfare
standards as understandings of animals increases.
