WA State Support Plan - Animal Welfare in Emergencies
13 Aug 2024The AVA provided a submission to the recent consultation undertaken by DPIRD on the WA State Support Plan - Animal Welfare in Emergencies.
AVA policy and position were utilised to emphasise the following key points:
- Fair compensation and appropriate professional indemnity protection for veterinarians involved in emergency response work.
- A clear definition of the AVA’s role within the emergency response plan.
- The need for preparedness activities, such as assessing local veterinary capacity, before emergencies rather than during.
- The need for collecting data on the impact of emergencies on animals in disaster reports to inform more accurate and effective responses.
- The importance of government-funded public awareness campaigns to enhance animal welfare during disasters.
