Dr Sam Jones made his bold vision for a state-of-the-art veterinary practice a reality with the help of BOQ Specialist.

There was a time when Dr Sam Jones was ready to leave the veterinary industry. Like many others working in the sector, the long hours and pressures that come with the role were wearing him down.

Instead, the Queensland-based vet went all-in on his vision for how things could be done, and in 2023 Dr Jones moved his clinic to a brand new, purpose-built veterinary facility, My Local Vet, in Capalaba.

‘I decided that I was going to start this business with the vision of creating a world-class work environment with a world-class work culture,’ says Dr Jones.

The new facility is three times larger than his previous practice, with technology and processes leading the way in patient care and workplace wellbeing.

A suite of modern technology, like digital X-ray machines and ultrasound systems help staff efficiently diagnose, treat and care for patients. Wi-Fi-enabled, thermostat-controlled heating and cooling lets Dr Jones control the temperature of the building from his phone.

Solar panels allow the practice to harness Queensland’s steady supply of sunshine, while offsetting the costs associated with the large amounts of electricity the practice uses.  Dr Jones even bought an IV fluid and towel warmer, so staff have warm towels and fluids on hand for patients.

Much thought was put into the design of the space too. Soundproof consult rooms, and a separate entry and waiting room for cats helps reduce stress associated with visiting the vet. An outdoor waiting area complete with a timber bench, relaxing music and an intercom to communicate with staff makes vet visits less stressful for anxious dogs.

Dr Jones also ensured the new clinic had a special 'Goodbye room’, with its own entry for families euthanising a beloved family pet. ‘It’s set up like a living room, so there's a couch and a candle burning. It's designed to be a peaceful, soothing environment for clients at a time when they're typically feeling very vulnerable.’

Funding the new facility

Complex ownership and billing structures can often cause issues for vets seeking finance, so having BOQ Specialist’s Cameron Chater, a dedicated financial specialist with industry knowledge made My Local Vet’s $1.2 million fit-out process run much more smoothly.

‘One of the challenges a business owner faces when trying to secure medical and dental finance is working with a relationship manager who doesn’t understand the intricacies of their industry,’ says Cameron.

‘The beauty of BOQ Specialist is that our relationship managers and credit team have specific industry knowledge and a strong understanding of the challenges our clients often face.'

‘It would have been stressful if I didn't have Cameron by my side. I honestly felt like he was on my team,’ Dr Jones says.
