VIC Victoria Division President Update - July 2023
30 Jun 2023
At the Victorian Division meeting in May, I stepped in to the very large shoes of our immediate past president, and those before him, accepting the Presidency of the Victorian Division Executive Committee. Thank-you to Hugh Millar for remaining on the committee as a valuable contributor, and to act as a mentor as I take on this role. And thank-you also to our ongoing committee members who have committed to continue in their roles representing the profession. The AVA is member led and relies on the membership to volunteer in leadership roles from branch level upwards. At state level it is an opportunity to provide a voice for the profession in Victoria, focusing on the issues that matter to us, and a rewarding chance to advocate for all aspects of the profession and the animals we care for. The Victorian Division does still have casual positions available on our executive committee, so if you are interested in becoming involved and helping to shape the direction of the AVA at the state level, please contact myself or Kristen Steele for further information (see contact details below).
Our work in advocacy is continuing, including a recent meeting with the State Agriculture Minister, Gayle Tierney, to discuss current issues of concern to the veterinary profession in general, as well as in Victoria, and speaking at a parliamentary enquiry into recreational bird hunting, representing the AVA policy. Other advocacy efforts include:
- mental health and wellness in the profession
- the veterinary shortage, especially in rural areas
- the sustainability of essential veterinary services for the public good, including wildlife care and biosecurity
- animal care and protection legislation
One of the major topic areas on our radar is the mental health and well-being of vets, as showcased at the recent AVA conference in Adelaide with the THRIVE initiative. For our Senior Advocacy Officer, Kristen Steele, this is a passion and a calling. To hear more about this, and learn more about Kristen’s involvement, I urge you all to listen to episode 8 of the Sick As A Dog podcast (in fact, all 8 episodes are fabulous and informative). Episode 8 includes an interview with Kristen where you can hear about her personal connection to this issue and her determination to play a significant role in supporting the profession. She is currently researching the issue and possible solutions, whilst advocating for the wellness of all vets, especially those most vulnerable.
As a veterinarian who has experienced a career in private practice (small and mixed), education and industry, including all the highs and lows, I look forward to representing all Victorian vets in my role as Division President. Please contact me with any issues and concerns, or to find out how you can participate in championing and empowering your colleagues, and contribute to developing and implementing strategies to address issues that matter to our profession in Victoria.
