WA Division President's Report - October 2024
30 Sep 2024This month we’ve pivoted a few plans and roles in order to better deliver opportunities to the membership.
I’d like to thank the new heads of the Southern Rural Branch Dr Jess Schilling and Dr Milly Watts for stepping into the role of branch leader and I look forward to seeing what our gatherings in 2025 will bring.
I’d also like to thank Dr Katie Currie for stepping into the lead role for the South Metro Branch, I know our Perth colleagues are chomping at the bit for an opportunity to congregate and collaborate.
Our November ultrasound, pathology and exotics workshops are now open for registration! These workshops have been a large organisational effort and I am greatly appreciative of all those who have assisted in making my crazy ideas a reality, especially our sponsors.
On a more somber note, the WA Division extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr Michael Lumsden in light of his recent passing. In addition to his contributions as WA Division President in early 2000’s, Dr Lumsden was remembered for his mentoring and support for the next generation of vets. He moved quietly throughout professional circles but with the strength to make the difficult things possible and with a caring and passionate nature that many admired.
Looking forward I am ready to get back into tackling advocacy issues surrounding rural practice, afterhours, and medicines and poisons legislation. As a strong supporter of veterinary students I would also like to commend the AVA for the work they are doing to promote the needs of veterinary students attempting to gain meaningful practical placements. As times are changing, so must we in an effort to even hold our place in the progression of veterinary science.
Be well and look after yourselves.
