This year, 3 exceptional AVA members were recognised in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List.

 

Dr John Aspley Davis AM

Dr John Aspley Davis was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division for ‘significant service to veterinary science, and to professional associations’.

Dr Aspley Davis is a Fellow of the AVA since 2005 and received Meritorious Service Awards from both the AVA (1994) and the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (2018). A former President of Veterinarians in Education, Research and Academia and President of the ACT Division, Dr Aspley Davis served 15 years on the Policy Advisory Council. A Member since 1980, Dr Aspley Davis dedicated almost 25 years to the ACT Division as a Committee Member.  

In addition to the AVA, Dr Aspley Davis has served extensively with the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and the ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board. Now working as a mobile veterinary surgeon, Dr Aspley Davis founded the Kippax Veterinary Hospital in 1977 and was the Founding Chairman of the Animal Emergency Centre Canberra in 2003.

 

Dr Francis Doughty OAM

Dr Francis (Frank) Doughty was recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for ‘service to veterinary science, and to the community’.

Dr Doughty is a Life Member of the AVA and was awarded an AVA Meritorious Service Award in 1998. Dr Doughty was an Executive Officer with the NSW Division for 20 years and the AVA representative, State Disaster Plan, NSW Agricultural and Animal Services Committee.

Dr Doughty had 42 years of service in animal health, both field and laboratory services with NSW Department of Agriculture and from 1983 – 1996 he was Director of Animal Quarantine NSW.

 

Dr Mark Schipp PSM

Dr Mark Schipp was awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) for ‘outstanding public service in improved outcomes for animal health and biosecurity in Australia and overseas’.

As the Australian Chief Veterinary Officer and Australia’s delegate to the World Organisation of Animal Health (WOAH), Dr Schipp has raised Australia’s profile and influence within this intergovernmental organisation, allowing him to promote Australia’s favourable animal health status internationally. Dr Schipp has led many initiatives over his career, in particular his advocacy and passion for a ‘One Health’ approach that brings the intersection of the animal, human and environmental health sciences into focus on the international stage.
