AVA congratulates second term Albanese Government: Ready to work in partnership

08 May 2025

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) congratulates the re-elected Albanese Government and reaffirms its commitment to working in partnership on key national priorities, including biosecurity, food security, animal health, and the resilience of the rural veterinary workforce.

Veterinarians are essential to Australia’s agricultural strength, public health systems, and the wellbeing of communities and animals across the country. From supporting $90 billion in agricultural production to safeguarding national biosecurity and export markets, the veterinary profession underpins critical aspects of Australia’s health and economic infrastructure.

In the lead-up to the election, the AVA conducted a wide-reaching advocacy campaign to highlight the importance of veterinary services and the urgent need for government support. This included meeting with parliamentarians across party lines, media opportunities and social media engagement, encouraging members to take local action, and the publication of its 2025 Federal Election Priorities.

The AVA called for a national veterinary workforce strategy, funding for student placement support, improved funding for rural placements, and investments in veterinary-led biosecurity and emergency response capabilities.

The Association’s advocacy included an unprecedented level of direct engagement with Ministers, Shadow Ministers and other Parliamentarians in Parliament House in Canberra. The relationships the AVA has established place the profession in an excellent position to build on this foundation in the new Parliament and work with the government to deliver practical reforms. A sustainable and well-supported veterinary workforce is fundamental to protecting Australia’s animals, communities, environment, and economy.
