Acclaimed journalist Caroline Winter has been nominated as a finalist for the June Andrews Award for Freelance Journalist of the Year, for her podcast highlighting the challenges faced by the veterinary profession.

This award, which is part of the Walkley Foundation’s prestigious Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism, is peer-selected and based on journalistic excellence. Caroline was one of the three finalists in her category. Winners of all the awards will be announced at the Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism in Sydney on 15 June.

Sick As A Dog is an eight-part podcast series about the veterinary profession. The podcast frames the crisis as a whole-of-community issue, with all participants – be they veterinary team members or animal owners – having a role to play. Caroline’s research involved travelling across Australia to listen to the stories and perspectives of those working in, or with, the veterinary profession. The AVA contributed material for the podcast, which explores the financial, political and community pressures that weigh heavily on veterinary teams.

"The AVA is thrilled that Caroline Winter has been nominated for a Walkley for the podcast 'Sick As A Dog' which talks to the issues facing our profession," said Dr Cristy Secombe, the AVA's Head of Veterinary and Public Affairs. "Caroline is a gifted journalist and storyteller. We are grateful for her sensitivity and investment in nurturing the stories from our fragile profession and creating an insightful engaging podcast where the difficult issues are discussed and what we need to do to create a thriving profession is explored."

The AVA congratulates Caroline for this incredible achievement.
