Expressions of Interest: AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioner Education Committee (ACEC)

04 Sep 2025

The AVA is looking for a recent graduate (ideally within the past 3-5 years) involved in small animal practice to join its Chartered Veterinary Practitioner (CVP) Education Committee.

About ACEC: The AVA has established the AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioner Education Committee (ACEC) to advise AVA on the academic strategic direction of the AVA CVP Accreditation Program, such as providing oversight of the Program’s academic governance, development, implementation and review of academic matters, including quality assurance and granting and revocation of accreditation and use of post nominals.

The AVA CVP accreditation is offered as a mark of excellence within the veterinary profession.  This accreditation, currently offered for small animal practitioners, provides assurance to the veterinary profession and to the public of the high-quality standards and expectations afforded to a veterinarian approved to use the AVA CVP post nominals, and use of the AVA CVP post nominals both represents and conforms to the high-quality expectations and standards within the veterinary profession.

ACEC and AVA Governance: ACEC reports through the AVA Education Advisory Committee (EAC) to the AVA. The AVA ensures education programs offered under its auspices are conducted in a responsible and ethical manner through the operation of the EAC that reports to the AVA Board. ACEC is a skills-based committee of members and AVA staff, and it acts as a conduit between the CVP sub-committees and EAC and facilitates the implementation of AVA’s continuing professional development (CPD) strategy.

ACEC Operations: Members are appointed for a period up to three years (with potential for reappointment up to three consecutive terms or nine-year maximum continuous appointment). The committee meets as required, and no less than twice per annum. Committee members are expected to attend a minimum of 80% of committee meetings. The members are expected to abide by the values underpinning the working of the committee essentially abiding by AVA’s policies and statement positions as well as exercising objectivity and integrity in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities.

ACEC Membership: In addition to the AVA support staff, currently the committee has members with diverse expertise and experience. These include small animal practitioners and specialists, veterinary academia, experts in education delivery and project management. CVP student member recruitment is currently underway. The position of a recent graduate in small animal practice is currently vacant, and this advertisement aims at filling this position.

Required attributes for the role:

  • Recent graduate (ideally within past 3-5 years) with experience in small animal practice.
  • Veterinary degree recognised in Australia.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education.
  • Demonstrable alignment with the AVA’s mission, values and culture.

Why join ACEC: In addition to providing networking and knowledge sharing opportunities, the committee has the potential to provide experience in policy development and strategic planning addressing aspects like CPD affordability and flexibility, workforce sustainability, building professional identity and future proofing the profession and can provide you with a platform to build upon your advisory and project management skills. This position provides a chance for steering the collaborations underpinning the Program and giving shape to its vision of expanding beyond small animal practitioners and creating public recognition of the importance and value of the use of AVA CVP post-nominals.

How to apply:  EOI of up to 1000 words are invited from individuals outlining your interest in joining the committee and the skills and experience that you would bring to the role. Please send your EOI to education@ava.com.au by 11:59 pm (Australia/Sydney) time, Friday 19th September 2025.
