SA Govt Reviews Animal Welfare legislation
27 Jan 2023The SA Government has announced a review of the state’s animal welfare laws. It has been 15 years since the last significant review of the Act.
“We recognise this legislation needs updating to reflect community expectations that laws against cruelty should be enforceable,” said Minister Close, Minister for Climate, Environment and Water.
The review information can be found online (https://yoursay.sa.gov.au/animal-welfare-act-review). In particular, it covers:
- Definition of animal
- Sentience
- Definition of harm and serious harm
- The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC)
- Animal welfare offences
- Animals in teaching and research
- Enforcement
