Hendra Virus July 2025: AVA resources and member communication
10 Jul 2025With the first confirmed case of Hendra virus since 2022, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) acted quickly to support veterinarians and horse owners with vital resources and clear communication.
Vaccination remains the most effective protection against Hendra virus for both horses and humans.
As always, AVA’s priority is your safety and ensuring you have clear, timely information and professional support.
Resources
EVA responded by expanding its suite of Hendra virus resources, and providing access to all AVA members, ensuring wide access to the latest information. These resources include guidance on vaccination, biosecurity protocols, and links to authoritative advice from the Queensland Department of Primary Industries.

Advocacy
Both AVA and EVA continue to advocate for the widespread uptake of the Hendra virus vaccine, emphasising its critical role in protecting both equine and human health. Our veterinary-led messaging is clear: vaccination, coupled with robust biosecurity, remains the best defence against Hendra virus outbreaks.
Communication and Media Engagement
The AVA and EVA prioritised transparent and timely communication, beginning with a member alert email sent to all EVA, NSW and QLD members. This alert contained a news article, media release and links to relevant resources. An SMS alert was also sent on Sunday evening.
