Inquiry into animal welfare policy in NSW

04 Mar 2022

The AVA has been involved in the reviews of the animal welfare legislation over the past couple of years. This has culminated with the draft of the Bill that the government has recently released. A significant number of our past recommendations have been incorporated into the new proposed legislation.

The current Parliamentary Inquiry is investigating and reporting on NSW animal welfare policy, regulatory and legislative frameworks (including looking at the draft Animal Welfare Bill). It is also inquiring into any measures required to streamline animal welfare laws, reduce and remove unnecessary regulation, and ensure existing policy and regulatory arrangements remain appropriately balanced.

The AVA has made a detailed submission to the Inquiry and includes recommendations for the Bill to include reference to sentience of animals and a refinement of the proposed minimum care requirements.
