Infectious diseases are challenging to diagnose, difficult to treat and a nightmare to control. Understanding these agents can help you protect your patients, your clients, and your veterinary team – and yield the best clinical outcomes. At the AVA Annual Conference in Adelaide (28 May to 2 June 2023), keynote speaker Professor Jane Sykes will be discussing her approach to infectious diseases.
Originally from Australia, Professor Sykes earned her veterinary degree and PhD in veterinary microbiology at the University of Melbourne. After completing a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Minnesota, she achieved Board Certification in Veterinary Internal Medicine. In 2006 she founded the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases (ISCAID), a group that, among other things, published the first antimicrobial guidelines providing specific treatment advice for dogs and cats.
You may know her as the editor of Canine and Feline Infectious Diseases, and contributor to many editions (including the latest) of Greene’s Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat. Her clear, concise explanations have made her a popular media spokesperson on animal diseases.
She is currently a Professor of Small Animal Medicine at the University of California Davis, but that hasn’t stopped her studying. She recently completed an MBA (University of Georgia and a Graduate Certificate of Public Health (Kansas State University).
A sought-after speaker on all things infectious, Professor Sykes will be talking about infectious diseases, from leptospirosis to SARS-CoV-2 to feline viruses and infectious canine respiratory diseases. She will deliver the 2023 Ben Cunneen Memorial Lecture on Leptospirosis – a One Health issue in companion animals.
Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the veterinarian who literally wrote the book on infectious diseases.
