This week AVA attended the 2024 Lucy’s Project Conference which covered a wide array of topics at the intersection of domestic and family violence (DFV) and animal welfare. The conference explored the connections between DFV and animal abuse, how services can better support survivors and their companion animals, and the broader societal impacts of these issues.

The conference emphasised the importance of collaboration across sectors, with veterinary professionals playing a key role in supporting vulnerable individuals and their pets.

Conference topics ranged from legislative changes and protective measures to the DFV impact on LGBTQ and rural communities. The emerging field of Veterinary Social Work was recognised, showing how this service will help address the needs of both people and animals in crisis situations.

There is considerable work being done in this area and the intersection with the veterinary profession is significant. The panel discussion on "How Can Animal Welfare and Veterinary Services Support Animals and People Experiencing Violence?"  highlighted the crucial role that veterinary services can play in identifying and supporting both animals and people affected by DFV. Presenters explored practical ways the veterinary profession can become a point of intervention and support, reinforcing the profession’s vital role in this space.
