More than 120 veterinary staff and industry sponsors spent a day out on Sydney Harbour last month, for the 2025 AVA NSW Sailing Day.

9 boats (Ceva, IDEXX, Randlab, Zoetis, Hills, IM3 Veterinary, Antech Australia, SASH North Ryde) set sail early from the Regatta on 6 March. AVA NSW Division Sailing Day Organiser Dr Geoff Golovsky – who has never missed one - attended his 21st Sailing Day, saying it was yet another perfect day out on the harbour.

“Despite a few sceptics when assured that the morning drizzle wouldn’t last—it didn’t. The skies cleared, the sun shone, and we had perfect light winds for a great day of sailing,” he said.

“With 9 boats and over 120 sailors, the energy was high as we set off. Our lunch stop was adjusted to Chowder Bay to avoid the cyclone swell across the heads, but it turned out to be a great call. And of course, the Brazilian BBQ to wrap up the day was a crowd favourite once again.

“A huge thank you to all our supporters and attendees. If you couldn’t make it this year, we can’t wait to see you next time!

“A special shoutout to Geoff Scarlett, who missed his first Sailing Day since its inception. For the last 10 years It’s been G1 and G2 at the helm of this event and before that Geoff had Vera and Tony, and his presence was definitely missed—though true to form, he still made sure the prawns were sorted!”

The AVA Sailing Day is a popular event that brings together the local veterinary community in a uniquely Sydney experience.

“Just like last year, the competition was tight (for those with a competitive streak) while the more laidback worked on their tan, ate, drank and were merry,” organiser Dr Tim Hopkins said.

“Arriving in Chowder Bay, the more adventurous swam ashore, to the traditional feast of BBQ meats, seafood and more refreshing beverages. As we ran downwind to Fort Denison, the wind picked up, we gybed in front of the Opera House and tacked back to Rushcutter’s Bay where -  you guessed it - more eating and drinking awaited.

“As always, a huge thank you to all the sponsors, without whom this unique event would not be possible. A special mention to Tim, Tom and Alyssa who made the event real.”

Sponsors had a great time making new connections and solidifying existing relationships with business owners and vets outside of a busy practice setting.
