Making it easier for overseas vets to enter Australia – we want your opinion
25 Jan 2023One of the priorities for the AVA is to improve the short-term supply of veterinarians. A key mechanism to do this is through overseas veterinarians coming to work in Australia.
There are many overseas veterinary degrees that are recognised by our regulatory bodies, however one of the commonly used visas, the Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (482), also requires veterinarians have two years of clinical experience to be eligible to apply for this visa.
We have heard of many suitably qualified overseas new graduate veterinarians who want to work as new graduates in Australia. The requirement for vets to have two years of experience is the barrier, and they are choosing other countries that don’t have this added requirement (like New Zealand).
We are keen to hear your thoughts on this issue as we are making a submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Migration in February.
