Protecting pets and wildlife: continuing the campaign to end the private use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides

In July, BirdLife Australia shared with you our campaign to end the private use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). SGARs continue to kill native wildlife and put our domestic animals and the wider Australian environment at risk.  

A review into the sale and regulation of SGARs is currently underway by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), but this is yet to be finalised.  

The APVMA has a number of reviews still in the pipeline and behind schedule, and we need your help to get the review of SGARs prioritised. It is within the power of Senator Murray Watt, the Minister for Agriculture, to expedite this review. That is the best, most effective way we can reach a national outcome for the safer regulation of SGARs. 

BirdLife is now asking Australians concerned with animal welfare and environmental health to join us in urging Minister Watt to use his Ministerial powers to accelerate the federal review of SGARs by the APVMA. We have written an open letter that will be presented to Minister Watt, reiterating the harms that SGARs are having on our environment and urging him to accelerate the formal review.
