Resources about pets in rental accommodation
03 Nov 2022
There are a number of benefits to pet ownership, with the 2019 Pets in Australia survey showing almost 90% of pet owners report pets having a very positive impact on their lives. However, the same survey showed that the main barriers to pet ownership were unsuitable housing or lifestyle situations, suggesting that in many cases, renting can be an impediment to pet ownership. This deprives renters of the many benefits of having a pet, including love, affection and companionship.
The AVA has gathered some resources that veterinarians can give to clients who might need to rent with pets:
- RSPCA knowledgebase article covering what to do to find and secure a pet-friendly rental property, and what tenants can do if they are unable to.
- Companion Animal Network Australia has compiled resources for both tenants and landlords regarding pets in rental properties.
