RU OK? Day, held on 8 September 2022, was a day dedicated to asking our friends, family members and work colleagues: R U OK?
All around the country, veterinary clinics stopped to take pause and ask each other this vital question. Independent research conducted by the AVA showed that more than half (66.6%) of veterinary respondents were currently, or had previously experienced, a mental health condition (compared to 61.8% of the general population). More specifically, 41.6% of survey respondents indicated that they had experienced a mental health condition within the preceding 12 months. It’s clear that in our profession, it has never been more important to check in with colleagues who might be struggling – often silently.
Many clinics opted to take time out of their busy day to have lunch together, or enjoy some tasty treats. Biscuits, cakes and pastries were out in full force, and vet clinic staff were encouraged to enjoy a cuppa and some conversation.
Taking steps to make colleagues feel appreciated can go a long way:
As can celebrating the human-animal bond:
One clinic even wore pyjamas on the day, which not only was super comfy but put a smile on people's faces!
Some clinics opted to share some statistics about the mental health challenges of being in the veterinary profession:
While many others did a general shout out to bring awareness to RUOK? Day:
Here at the AVA we held a webinar, open to all veterinary professionals both member and non-member. The webinar was hosted by AVA President Dr Bronwyn Orr and featured Dr Olivia (Liv) Oginska discussing the importance of psychological safety. It is available to watch on replay.
We also put together a video of our veterinary colleagues sharing stories about times they have been supported, and times when they have supported others. We thank the veterinarians and veterinary students who contributed - Dr Janet Murray, Dr Reggie Shenouda, Elizabeth Khor, Paul Christensen, Dr Anne Quain, Dr Pieter Theron, Dr John Anstee and Dr Geoff Golovsky. The conversation shouldn't stop here, though. The AVA is committed to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of all veterinarians. Launched this year, the AVA's THRIVE program is an industry-led veterinary wellness initiative that aims to support veterinarians and veterinary staff to lead satisfying, prosperous, and healthy careers. We have many upcoming initiatives planned as part of the THRIVE program. To learn more, click here.
