Acclaimed journalist Caroline Winter has taken a deep dive into the challenges faced by the veterinary profession. She has travelled across the country to listen to many stories and perspectives of those working in, or with, the veterinary profession.
Sick As A Dog is an eight-part podcast series about a profession in crisis. The podcast is framed as a whole-of-community issue, with all participants, be that veterinary team members or animal owners, having a role to play
Over eight episodes she explores the complex web of issues facing the veterinary profession and the impact that has on its people, the animals they care for, the community they serve and the serious ramifications those issues are having on mental health, lives and livelihoods, food security and animal welfare.
Caroline talks with many wonderful people, hears stories of heartache and triumph from the city to the bush and explores the financial, political and community pressure that weighs heavily on veterinary teams.
The AVA has contributed our knowledge to the podcast and we are grateful to Caroline and her team for highlighting the issues facing the profession. The issues require clever solutions that will involve the whole community. One of these is the THRIVE initiative that the AVA is championing. Changes are underway, and there is optimism that things can improve. Dr Kristen Steele, Senior Advocacy Officer at The Australian Veterinary Association says, “I genuinely think with the right support the profession can fix this. I genuinely think there is hope.”
