The AVA Chartered Veterinary Practitioner
29 Sep 2023
The AVA Chartered Veterinary PractitionerTM (AVA CVP) professional accreditation represents the next step in veterinary education.
Designed by veterinarians for veterinarians, the AVA CVP develops and recognises excellence in small animal general practitioners and delivers the practical skills needed to work in or run a successful veterinary practice.
It’s the only veterinary CPD in Australia that provides well-rounded coverage of topics not traditionally covered in undergraduate programs. This includes research and use of evidence-based medicine; building personal wellbeing and psychological resources; creating positive workplace cultures; and reinforcing professional societal responsibilities.
Program structure
With a primary focus on developing personal and professional skills, AVA CVP accreditation requires students to complete four AVA courses (420 CPD points) and 150 approved CPD points in small animal medicine and elective practice options of interest.
Core courses:
- Veterinary personal and professional effectiveness
- Essential veterinary clinical skills
- Veterinary evidence-based medicine: Evaluation and communication
- Understanding our role in society: Professional responsibilities and One Health
CPD requirements:
- Medicine (discipline specific) – 60 CPD points
- Elective study - 90 CPD points
Flexible, pay-as-you-go study options allow the AVA CVP to be undertaken over two to four years part time. Designed, developed and delivered by leading experts in small animal veterinary practice, veterinary specialist practice, and veterinary educators, the self-paced online courses allow students to study at a time that suits them. All courses are supported by interactive Zoom discussion forums which enable the cohort to come together and build a supportive learning community with their peers and educators.
Successful 2023 pilot
Running as a pilot program in 2023, the AVA CVP enjoys an impressive 98% overall satisfaction rating from enrolled students who have strongly endorsed the program.
Current student and experienced vet Dr Ross Polst from the Hinterland Veterinary Surgery in Nerang, Queensland is delighted with how practical the course is. “Every topic has something that I can immediately take away and implement into my day-to-day practice. I definitely encourage all veterinarians, young and old, to enrol in the course and see for yourself how much you and the profession can grow.”
Becoming an AVA Chartered Veterinary PractitionerTM is about more than completing an education program – it’s an ongoing commitment to high professional standards and the continuous skills development of Australia’s veterinary workforce.
