Townhall 3 recap: Member categories and streamlining policies
24 Jul 2025I am writing to you from Washington DC where I have been fortunate to attend the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Convention, World Veterinary Association Congress and International Veterinary Officers Coalition meetings, where we have connected with colleagues from around the world. It has been energising to see how other associations are responding to the evolving needs of the profession. It has also been a timely reminder of why our own Constitution reform is so important.
Back home, we have just wrapped up our final Constitution Townhall on the Stage 3 proposal. Whether you joined live or watched the recording afterwards, thank you for your participation. Over the past few months, your thoughtful questions, honest feedback and ideas have helped shape this process.

Townhall 3 Summary
1. A clearer, more inclusive membership structure
AVA currently has seven membership types. Our Constitution Reform Stage 3 proposal is to move to just three core categories:
- Veterinarian
- Student
- Allied veterinary professional (including practice managers, vet nurses, techs and other support staff)
Member voting rights will not change but this clearer language reflects how the profession works today and helps people see where they belong in the AVA.
2. More flexibility, less red tape
The current Constitution locks in a lot of operational detail, things like how many members a SIG needs or how committee meetings run.
This proposal retains core structures like SIGs, Branches and Policy Advisory Council (PAC) in the Constitution but moves day-to-day processes into policy. That means they can be updated more easily as member needs evolve.
3. What is not changing?
- AVA’s purpose and not-for-profit status
- Full member (veterinarian) voting rights
- The structure and role of PAC
- The voice and role of SIGs, branches and other groups
It’s really important to remember that this is not about reducing representation. Instead, it’s about making things simpler, more modern and easier to navigate.
What’s next?
The Consultation period closes 31 July 2025
We will continue to review all feedback received throughout this consultation period., In August, we will share the revised Constitution proposal so members can see exactly what is changing and why, based on their feedback. A formal vote is currently scheduled for late September 2025. We will keep you updated every step of the way.
