Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia Day One Competency Standards
04 Apr 2023
The Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA) have developed Day One Competency Standards that set a benchmark of essential clinical skills for veterinary nurses and technicians in Australia.
These Competency Standards set out the minimum essential competencies that are expected of all graduate veterinary nurses and technicians to have met upon graduation, to ensure they are safe to practice from day one. They are designed to foster clinical mentorship and learning by providing veterinary practice owners with a resource to help assess and coach newly graduated nurses and technicians.
It is important to note that while these Competency Standards align with the ‘Animal Care and Management Training Package – Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing’ curriculum, that self-assessment against the skills list does not replace formal training and assessment via a registered training organisation.
The Day One Skills list is a regulatory benchmark of essential clinical skills based on the VNCA Day One Competency Standards for Veterinary Nursing and can be accessed via the links below.
