Every pet counts – take part in the Victorian Pet Census

In an Australian first, the Victorian Government is launching a Pet Census to help shape the future of animal welfare and ensure pet owners have the support and services they need. According to the Animal Medicines Australia Pets in Australia survey, an estimated 28.7 million pets live in around 6.9 million Australian households, with pet ownership rates having risen from 61 percent to 69 percent since the pandemic. The aim of the Pet Census is to establish more data around pet ownership rates in Victoria.

Starting from 10am on Monday 3 July, Victorian pet owners can take part in the Pet Census, answering questions on pet ownership and their attitudes and experiences. The Victorian Pet Census will take 15 minutes to complete and will be accessible at animalwelfare.vic.gov.au.

The Andrews Labor Government recently allocated $18.5 million funding to animal welfare and wildlife causes in the Victorian Budget 2023/24. This included $7 million toward the Animal Welfare Fund grants program, highlighting the importance of companion animals in the lives of Victorians. Data gathered via the Pet Census will allow the Government to establish pet ownership rates across Victoria, and inform their efforts to support pet owners and improve pet welfare.
