If you’re a recent veterinary graduate or a student about to start working in a practice, you’ve likely heard that the first few years in the profession can  be full of growth, surprises, and steep learning curves The AVA Graduate Mentoring Program is here to help veterinarians navigate those early years, whether it be for a difficult case, a conflict or a surgery success.

“One of the biggest perks of the AVA Graduate Mentoring Program is the chance to connect with experienced vets who aren’t your boss or colleague,” AVA Executive Officer of Wellness, Dr Rebecca Faris said.

“It’s an opportunity to get honest, unbiased advice from someone who’s been in your shoes, but isn’t involved in your day-to-day work life. Whether you’re dealing with a tricky case, a challenging client, or just want to talk through your next career move, your mentor is there to help you out, judgment-free.”

When Dr Tristram Finn graduated, he got involved in the program to garner support around the many unknowns that come with entering the workforce.

“When I graduated, I thought, I’m jumping into the unknown here… I think it would be great to have someone to chat to just in case things go belly up,” he said.

“If I had to give any advice to someone who was thinking about getting involved, I’d say do it. You’ve got nothing to lose, you might learn a lot, you might get someone who can support you when you really need it and the first few years of practice are a really scary place, so definitely get involved.”

Through the Mentoring Program, mentees are encouraged to reach out their mentor at least once a month. This can be via phone, video conference or face to face if feasible. In addition to the clinical experience they bring to their role, AVA mentors also receive training through the program to develop their interpersonal and communication skills, equipping them with the coaching mechanisms required to guide mentees to success

AVA student membership is offered at no cost, allowing you to participate in the mentoring program for free. This valuable benefit provides early-career veterinarians with access to an extensive network of support, resources, and professional opportunities from the very beginning of their careers.

“As veterinary professionals, having a trusted mentor can make all the difference in building confidence and resilience early on,” Dr Faris added. “The AVA Mentoring Program is designed to support you not just clinically, but personally and professionally, helping you thrive in what can be a demanding but incredibly rewarding career.”
