ACV Virtual Clinical Rounds engage future veterinarians

20 Nov 2025

“Real vets, presenting real cases to our veterinary student groups.”

The ACV Clinical Rounds is a new initiative being offered by the Australian Cattle Veterinarians Group, that offers a monthly, online interactive series designed to connect veterinary students with professionals working in the field.

Each month, 2 veterinarians present real-world cases, focusing on the entire decision-making process behind diagnosis and treatment.

James Cook University graduate  Alex Rasmussen, who is now the young member representative for the ACV explained, “From initial phone call, through to clinical exam, diagnostics, differentials and diagnosis, these vets go into detail about their clinical decision making throughout the entire process.”

He added, “There is also a focus on 'what's next?', where the practitioner will discuss preventative management, and plans to reduce the risk of future disease.”

Led by Dr John House from the University of Sydney and the ACV Education Convenor, the program has featured practitioners including Dr Kate Mitchell, Dr Sarah Matthews, and Dr Matt Ball.

Students from across the country have participated online, often gathering in groups to learn together. “We have been getting photos sent through of groups of students ordering in pizza, some drinks, and having 'watch parties' to engage in the content together,” Alex said.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with students praising the practical insights and problem-solving approaches demonstrated by the presenters.

“When out on property, 'I don't know' becomes a pretty common phrase, but knowing how to utilise diagnostic pathways and resources, and engaging with other practitioners to help (i.e. Pathologists, DPI, Mentors, Nutritionists) is vital,” Alex said.

“These interactive webinars put all the tools in the student's toolkit, to tackle real life cases on day 1.”

The next session will be held 3 December 2025 at 7pm.
