Australian veterinarians are actively involved in fighting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by promoting antimicrobial stewardship, developing and implementing antibiotic prescribing guidelines, and by spreading awareness about the appropriate use of antimicrobial medications such as antibiotics.
October is National Mental Health Month. The AVA has partnered with SuperFriend - an organisation that specialises in designing workplace mental health initiatives, to assist us in developing a comprehensive veterinary wellness strategy for the profession.
Scientists at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, have confirmed Hendra virus can be found across a broad region of the country, after uncovering a previously unidentified type of Hendra virus in flying foxes in the southern and western states.  
October 4th is World Animal Day, an annual event that aims to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. As leaders in animal health and welfare, veterinarians play a key role in the pursuit of this objective.  
The AVA has recently received several enquiries from media outlets, about vets being requested to supply ivermectin to people for use as a COVID-19 treatment/prevention and have been asked if there is currently any associated concern with supply of the drug.
