The AVA Emerging Leader Award, presented by BOQ Specialist, recognises a high-achieving individual within 8 years of completing their university studies. Dr Jack Egan exemplifies the award’s purpose through his leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for the veterinary profession. Earlier this year he was recognised and presented with the inaugural award at the AVA Gala Dinner during the AVA Conference.

A 2017 graduate of Charles Sturt University, Jack has made a huge impact within the Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) Special Interest Group. He has revitalised young member engagement, spearheaded educational initiatives, and represented EVA on the international stage.

“My family's immense work ethic has been modelled from childhood, and this was again confirmed through my employers' (Jim Vasey, Angus McKinnon, Duncan Runciman and Robert Davies) who all prove the more you put into the profession the more you will receive,” he said.

Jack is deeply passionate about supporting and inspiring the next generation of veterinarians, particularly through his work with EVA.

“My early career has been flooded with so much negativity and pessimism surrounding the veterinary profession. I agree there are many challenges that need addressing and the AVA has been amazing with their advocacy and education.”

“Children dream of being a vet and we need to nurture this. Being a veterinarian is an absolute privilege, and it is the most diverse, challenging and fulfilling career. When we show young vets there is a whole network of people like them facing the same situations and challenges, then we can help each other get through them and find great satisfaction in our profession.”

Jack says that receiving the Emerging Leader Award also reflects the collective guidance of the mentors who have supported him throughout his career.

“Mentors have been one of the biggest factors in my journey so far and am very grateful for their time, energy and wisdom,” he said. “They have helped point me in the right direction and opened doors for amazing opportunities. They have also helped me through the various challenges and re-assured me that it is all part of the learning process.”

Reflecting on receiving the award, Jack expressed both humility and optimism about his profession’s future.

“I am very honoured and privileged to have received this award from the AVA, and I’m excited about the future of the veterinary profession in Australia," he said.

“I am very fortunate to have met many amazing people in our profession and the greater community who I consider as mentors and friends. I cannot encourage young vets more to get out of your comfort zone, meet people and find your mentors.”
