The Australian Veterinary Association has announced the results of its latest board elections, with two new directors joining the board and one re-elected to return for another term.

Dr Peter Letchford has been elected as Cattle Sector Director, bringing more than three decades of on-the-ground experience in northern Australian beef production. A Queensland University veterinary graduate, Dr Letchford grew up on a mixed farm before dedicating his career to the cattle industry, spending 33 years as a flying vet across the Kimberley and Northern Territory. His commitment to the industry was recognised in 2023 when he was named Australian Bovine Practitioner of the Year. Dr Letchford's deep field experience and industry networks will be a significant asset to the AVA Board.

Chris Taylor joins the board as an Independent Director. A Chartered Accountant and experienced board director, Mr Taylor previously served as CEO of an animal agriculture research and innovation corporation. He brings a strong track record in governance, financial oversight, and strategy, with experience spanning agriculture, natural resources, sport, member bodies, and government. As an independent voice on the board, Mr Taylor’s commercially grounded perspective will support the AVA's long-term sustainability and strategic ambitions.

Returning to the board for another term is Professor Margaret Reilly, re-elected as Veterinary Director. A Murdoch University graduate with an MBA and fellowships with the Governance Institute of Australia and the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Professor Reilly brings deep clinical, academic, and corporate experience. As former Professor of Practice in Veterinary Science at James Cook University, she has long championed continuing education and business management within the profession. She is also Deputy Chair of the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland and a recipient of the AVA Meritorious Service Award, recognising her sustained and distinguished service to the association.

All three directors will serve three-year terms, contributing to a minimum of five full board meetings annually. The new AVA President will be announced at the upcoming AVA Awards Gala Dinner, Wednesday 20 May.
