Veterinarians recognised with Australia Day honours
29 Jan 2026The AVA congratulates 6 veterinarians who have been recognised in the 2026 Australia Day Honours for their exceptional contributions to veterinary science, education, and the broader community.
Each of these professionals has dedicated their career to improving animal health and welfare, advancing veterinary research, or supporting the next generation of veterinarians through education and mentorship.
Emeritus Professor Virginia Perryman Studdert (AVA Life Member) has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the General Division for her distinguished service to veterinary science, to tertiary education, and to animal disease research and comparative medicine. Professor Studdert’s influential work has shaped both veterinary practice and academic excellence across Australia.
Five other veterinarians have been recognised as Members of the Order of Australia (AM):
- Emeritus Professor Christopher Raymond Bellenger, for significant service to veterinary science, to tertiary education, and to the Anglican Church of Australia.
- Emeritus Professor Colin Burton Chapman, for significant service to pharmacy and pharmaceutical science research, education, and practice.
- Dr Warren John Henry, for service to veterinary science and to global humanitarian programs.
- Dr Robin Grant Stanley, for significant service to veterinary ophthalmology, and to tertiary and vocational education.
- Dr Rodney Clement Straw, for significant service to veterinary surgical oncology and to tertiary education.
The AVA extends heartfelt congratulations to each recipient for their outstanding achievements and lifelong commitment to animals, science, and society.
