With a bona fide reptile guru as the keynote speaker, this year’s Unusual Pet & Avian (UPAV) Conference is shaping up to be a don’t miss occasion. Canberra will be brimming with exotic veterinarians in late November, as the UPAV Conference conveniently follows the Association of Avian Veterinarians Committee (AAVAC) Conference in the same venue.
15 veterinarians attended the Australian Reproduction Veterinarians Group (ARV) Transcervical Insemination (TCI) workshop on Saturday 31 August and provided overwhelmingly positive feedback, stating it was a valuable learning experience. The group have since stayed in contact, sharing support and resources.
The AVA attended the University Accord Public Hearing to address the exclusion of veterinary students from the Commonwealth Prac Payment scheme, saying placement poverty disproportionally affects veterinary students.
The AVA congratulates director Dr Tracy Sullivan, member Dr Alicia Kennedy and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital veterinarian Dr Andrew Hill, who have been awarded prestigious Churchill Fellowships by the Winston Churchill Trust (Australia).

The AVA has released its 2024 Queensland State Election Platform. Key issues are: Enhanced biosecurity and funding for emergency animal disease; Rural and regional veterinary workforce support ; Support for veterinary students; Support the provision of public good by veterinarians ; Mental health support for veterinary professionals
