Further Updates to Greyhound NSW Policy

19 Feb 2019

Following on from last week’s newsletter, we apologise that unfortunately we sent out some incorrect information. Please see the following for updated information.

The Greyhound Racing Act, 2017 was legislated and the Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC) became the principle controlling body, replacing GRNSW as regulator for Greyhound racing in NSW on 1 July 2018.

GWIC developed a new policy related to the euthanasia and re-homing of greyhounds. GWIC Re-homing policy can be accessed here. The owner of a greyhound has specific requirements for re-homing attempts and the intent of the policy is to:

  • Maximise opportunities for re-homing greyhounds that are retired from, or otherwise unsuitable for, racing
  • Eliminate, wherever possible, unnecessary euthanasia of greyhounds
  • Ensure that, where it is necessary to euthanase a greyhound, euthanasia is conducted in a humane manner
