Messages from NSW DPI
13 Feb 2019Non-native pest animals can have a negative impact on the natural environment and community as they can:
- Prey on native animals
- Compete with other animals for food and shelter
- Destroy natural habitats
- Potentially introduce exotic animal diseases
NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has rolled out a ‘Most Unwanted’ Campaign to encourage the people of NSW to look for and report non-native pest animals.
This campaign aims to highlight the impacts of non-native pest animals on our environment, businesses and communities and to provide information to help identify, manage and report NSW’s ‘Most Unwanted’. A digital promotion pack has been created, including social videos (for posting on facebook), a poster and brochure for vets to use and to help spread the word to clients. The poster, brochure and NSW DPI Non-native animals website can be used by vets to help identify key incursion species and understand how to report them.
If you become aware of unusual animals in the wrong place or suspect illegal activities such as the movement, keeping, breeding and sale of unusual non-native animals, you should make a confidential report to NSW DPI as soon as possible on 1800 680 244 or online.
The AVA NSW Division works with a number of stakeholders on various advocacy initiatives for the profession. This is an example of us working together following the AVA’s submission to the DPI to compile some educational information to be communicated to veterinarians
